in the struggles of life.

WHAT TO SAY TO A DYING LOVED ONE

“The time of my departure has come (2 Timothy 4:6).”

Last Tuesday my sister, Sharon, and I visited our brother, Roger, at home hospice in Virginia. When we entered Roger’s room, his eyes lit up. His face was all aglow. Just as we expected, giant tears began to flow. The three of us hugged for a long while. At some point Roger spoke in a broken whisper, “I’m so glad you came.” That’s when I realized this visit was going to be much harder than I could ever have imagined. It was heart breaking to see someone you love who had been so full of life to be so weak and frail. My brother was alert but struggled to connect words to converse. There was a calm in Darlene’s voice when she informed us that Roger appeared to be in the final stages of Lewy Body Dementia and how both had come to peace with the end of his earthly life drawing near. The Apostle Paul spoke freely to Timothy about his impending execution. As a result, their affliction had become their greatest witness of the gospel. In similar fashion, with eternity rushing towards him, Roger and Darlene still have a sense of purpose. Despite being enslaved to a disease that normally ends in combative anger his hospice team wonders where his joy is coming from. Curious, unsaved neighbors have stopped by and taken notice. What do you say to a loved one when you know they’re dying, and when you know you may not see them again? You thank them. The next morning Sharon and I sat at Roger’s bedside and lovingly expressed our gratitude for him. I said, “Roger, I want you to listen carefully to what I’m about to say. Thank you for your many years of faithfulness and obedience to God. Thank you for loving Jesus, for loving Darlene, for loving your family, for loving sinners, for loving me. You have preached the gospel to African nations; you have multiplied God’s grace to generations. You have planted churches and trained successful pastors to shepherd them. You have given your heart and soul to the work of ministry. Many will be in heaven because of your dedicated service. Thank you for being there when I needed you the most. Thank you for praying for me in my darkest days. Thank you for not quitting when your pain became unbearable. Thank you for being my brother…I love you.” Is there a loved one nearing the end of life whom you need to thank?
